1. Choose one conflict in The Hobbit, and explain how Tolkien uses it to move the story forward. Don't forget to cite page number when appropriate.
One way that Tolkien makes this story move on is when Bilbo got knocked out and woke up to gollum. Gollum was going to eat him but decided to play a riddle game with bilbo. They had to guess which riddle each of them said. Bilbo won, but decided to still eat him. When bilbo woke up he found Gollums lost ring that makes you disappear. Well Gollum suspects bilbo took it and starts casing him. Billbo put the ring on and gollum walked right through him and accidently led him to the doorway to get out. Tolkein made the story move on by making bilbo get lucky and stay alive Capital letters for names? This is not very clear to me. It sounds like Bilbo ate Gollum? Woke up to find the ring? He was not sleeping down there! ~Mrs. Best
2. In your own words, describe what happens next to Bilbo and the dwarves in the forest. Bilbo and the dwarves come across wolves, called wargs. The wolves stay sitting there in the trees so that the dwarves cant get out. Gandolph really wanted to get away so he sent fire balls to the wolves and one of the fireballs gandolph threw at the wolves hit the chief of the pack. During all of this going on the dwarves decided to stack wood and keep a fire going. The eagles that were enemys of the goblins heard what was going on and helped the dwarves and bilbo free by attacking them. Wolves are in the trees? No... the dwarves are!? Not sure what this is saying. The eagles attacked Bilbo and the dwarves? Read Thomas D's or Nikki's for an idea of what I am looking for. ~ Mrs. Best

When Gandolf first visits Bilbo, looking for someone to share in an adventure, Bilbo tells Gandalf that hobbits are
"...plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can't think what anybody sees in them "(7).
The dwarves are not quite sure that Bilbo will be able to handle the adventures at all, and Bilbo himself wonders how he found himself at The Green Dragon Inn, riding a pony away from Hobbiton. But now, Bilbo has become the unspoken leader of the party. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would never have made it to Lonely Mountain.
Is an adventure something that happens to us or how we react to what happens? Often in life, adventures are not as obvious as killing giant spiders or escaping from an Elven king's dungeon. Sometimes adventures are made out of ordinary days and ordinary events, with ordinary people who become the heroes. You may not even realize you've been in an adventure until after it's over!
Think about the times you have learned a new skill, moved, changed schools, competed in sports, welcomed a new pet, discovered a new friend, performed in front of an audience, or had a terrifying fall. These events are adventures in process. Have you grown or changed from your experience with any of these situations, as Bilbo grew and changed because of his adventure with the dwarves? Recall a time when something happened to cause you to grow and change in a positive way. Respond on your wiki page.
I think an adventure is dangerous sometimes and fun sometimes this is an example of an adventure i have had in my lifetime. A Couple of years ago I was on my way to go get my new dog. I was afraid it was going to be ugly, not like me, always bite, keep me up all night, and I would not like it. I was in the car with my Mom, sister, and brother. We had about an hour car ride to go pick her up and get to see her for the first time! I was kind of nervous and could not wait to see her. We got there and i met my dog and thought she was so cute and im going to have a blast with her. We brought her home and played with her and about a week into how long we had her, we found out that instead of going outside she loves to go to the bathroom in my room! It got very annoying after she did it everyday. We tried to stop it by closing the door every time I left and was not in the room. Somehow she broke the door so that it does not fully close. After the first month, I felt like I did not like her very much. I thought one day that I can not dislike my dog because we are going to be living together for awhile. I played with my dog for the next couple of weeks and got really close to her. Now I really like her and love to play with her, take her on walks and play fetch with her. I love my new dog Lucy. This was an adventure for me because I learned to accept my new dog even though I did not like her at first. ~ Good connections to Lucy. Would have liked you to connect/ refer to the changes in Bilbo. ~Mrs. Best
Hobbit Question 4 March 29, 2011
If Thorin could have lived, do you think he would have regretted his greed? What do you think Tolkien is trying to teach us about material wealth by Thorin's death? In your response, site textual evidence to support your response. Use page numbers too.
If Thorin lived I think he would have regretted his greed. He apologized to Bilbo before he died for him being so harsh to bilbo after he gave beord the arkenstone. He said to bilbo "I would take back my words and deeds at the gate" (Page 90) I think Tolkien is trying to tell us that wealth is not the main thing in life and it is not something to die for. You do not freak out over something that is not the main thing in your life and just live with what God gives you. ~ I agree Thorin would have regretted his greed. ~Mrs. Best (no link back?)
